An Individual Response to this Hangover

Today I am heartbroken for my country. I am saddened by the reemergence of prejudices, fears and lesser desires into our national consciousness.  These are things I thought had long ago vanished.

Given the outcome of the election it is clear that my political views of tolerance, equality and understanding are no longer what motivate the majority of American voters.  Because I do not want to go off in a tirade against people I have known all my life I have deactivated all of my presences on social media.  I will be gone from there for a goodly time.

Dear readers I value your friendship and if you want to stay in touch drop me an e-mail with your preferred e-mail and I will send you mine.  If you are primarily a texter I will give you my digits.  Things I used to post on Facebook, well at least some of that stuff will be going on my blog.

Keep the faith.  Keep in touch. We as a nation aren’t really what we told the world we were last night.  I will close with a Billy Bragg quote.

"Our enemy really isn't capitalism, it's cynicism. That's one the things I learned from Woody (Guthrie)... Not to be cynical... That cynicism... It destroys you, it rots you away from the inside. So that sense of optimism and humanity... which 20 years ago I would have called socialism but now I'll call compassion... You know, that idea is still out there and alive and if you can plug into that and encourage that it makes it all worth while. "
